Our story

Like most parents, we’d do anything we could to support our kids.

Our son Lance was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. He struggled with school, but he’s always been a great helper and worker. During the COVID quarantine (when all kids were struggling with school) Lance turned 15 years old, and we talked about starting a small family business so he could learn some job skills.

We’ve always had fresh-cut flowers in our home and posted photos of our creations on social media.

One of our friends commented, “Do you deliver?” and we thought, well we sure could! Our family business name “Atypical Blooms” is a pun. We design and deliver unique bouquets with love, and people in the autism community like Lance are sometimes referred to as “Atypical.” And he’s blooming!

Our long-term goal for Lance is that he loves his work, and that he has a permanent place with our family business. Or, we hope that he acquires the job skills and experience he needs to work elsewhere, and he can find and keep a job that he finds rewarding. Our long-term goal for Atypical Blooms is to employ job coaches and other teens and adults with autism or other disabilities. We believe the sky is the limit for our kids!

Lance is a little camera-shy, but here’s a video of him talking about his work.

We are truly thankful to our community for your support.
